End of Beginning

May 16, 2023 @ 7:00 pm - 9:00 pm

End of Beginning is inspired by Ali Akbar Khan’s 1995 recording of Rag Sindu Bhairavi from the album “Morning Visions.” End of Beginning is written in Rag Sindhi Bhairavi from the collection of late morning ragas, Asavari Thaat, in Indian classical music. The title End of Beginning is in reference to the time of day associated with Rag Sindhi Bhairavi. The rhythmic cycle of the piece is jhap taal, a 10-beat cycle. The piece includes many tihais, a rhythmic cadence found in Indian classical music in which a phrase is repeated three times in an overlapping meter, where the last note of the third repeat resolves to beat one of the cycle.

The piece also incorporates ornamentations from Persian classical music and Eastern European folk music. Timbres and rhythms from rap music and music of the Ewe speaking people of Ghana are included in the piece.

At some points in the piece, musicians are asked to sing sargam, the Indian classical music equivalent of solfège, and solkatu, the rhythmic language of South Indian classical music.

My hope is that listeners will resonate with End of Beginning in a way that helps them embark upon the afternoon of their days.
